DJ Nico
Girl About Town
Monthly, Thursday 10-11pm
Soul, R&B, Funk, Northern Soul, Vinyl
DJ Nico has been collecting music since she was 16, frequenting record fairs in legion halls in her hometown of Toronto, Canada. This started a lifelong obsession with learning about artists, music scenes, zine culture, collecting vintage furniture, ephemera, vinyl, cassettes, CDs, etc.
Music retail was her next destination that paid her way through university – the girl in the record shop literally, HMV to be precise when it first opened up downtown. She also nerded out as a volunteer for newly developed music festivals in the city (NXNE, Canadian Music Week).
Her stint in radio started as a volunteer at CIUT 89.5FM in 2006. Sound teching various shows led eventually to hosting, programming and producing a long-standing popular program called Vinyl from the Crypt. Since then she has produced one off shows for WFMU’s Rock n Soul Radio, Boss Radio ’66, and Soho Radio’s Mono Loco Mixtape.
Nico hosts a monthly 60s soul dance party called “With It” along with local and visiting guest selectors from around the world. She also helps run the collective Toronto Soul Club.
“Girl about town” is a play on The Jam’s “Boy about town”. She’s a huge The Jam/TSC/Paul Weller fan.
Expect to hear 50s RnR, RnB, 60s soul, surf, garage, beat, girl groups, 70s funk, post punk, 80s new wave, 90s indie through to modern artists – all with a mod twist!
