“When I started working at Quaff Records for Roy The Roach in 1988 there was no ‘soulful house’ scene, it was just house music. Roy was into everything danceable. We stocked rare groove, disco, funk, boogie, electro, New York dance and house music from Chicago, Detroit and New York.” Phil Asher – DJ/ Producer
A Pioneer of London’s Rare Groove movement, originally known on the scene as “The Funky Roach” and the guy who owned Quaff.
Roy became deeply involved with dance music in the mid 80’s with the opening of seminal rare groove shop Quaff Records. The shop was an integral part of that music movement and the warehouse scene that developed from it.
Founder of one of the earliest multi-room raves Dance Wicked in the late 80’s he also played for Gilles Peterson at the legendary Dingwalls Sunday Sessions. When ‘House’ music arrived the shop became the forerunner in providing music to the DJ’s that are now considered the founders and mainstay of what has become a worldwide phenomenon. Shows on Studio FM, WBLS London and London’s favourite dance station, Kiss FM, cemented his connection with the rise of club culture as we know it.
